What is the purpose of Groups?

In playing around with the demo, I noticed the Users and Groups section in the Admin. But, it doesn't appear that Groups provide any functionality other than maybe for ranking purposes in the forum. It seems that you are either a full admin or a user, with no in between levels or permissions, such as a content contributor. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Groups can be used for a ton of things, if you were to enable advanced permissions (which you cannot do on the demo) you would be able to see some of the things that they can be used for.
