404 page not working on expired pages

Hello,
Using advanced permissions, we set the page viewable to Guest for a certain time frame i.e. 1 month. Once that time frame has expired, the Guest will get the login page instead of a 404 / page not found. Does anyone have any information as to why this would occur, and is there a solution?
Any info would be helpful.
