Adding a custom xxxxx.php page in my theme's folder, doesn't show in pagetypes.

EDIT: Finally worked. All I had to do is make the handle of the pagetype the same name as the filename. So, if the filename was xyz.php, then the handle should be xyz.
I've created a site about 1 month ago, and I wanted a custom page type and so I created "artists.php" inside the theme's folder, next to default.php, and then I was able to create a sub page, from that artistis.php.
Now, on a different site, when I try to do that, I simply don't have the page type under add a sub page.
Also, on the previous site, my default.php was different from view.php, which was perfect, since the homepage was different from the subpages and that worked great. Now, when I add a subpage, that subpage doesn't show as view.php, but as default.php.
What can I do?
