Adding product, but sub-page created - why?

Howdy all,
We have a client using an old 2012 version of C5 running eCommerce, and only recently they have noticed that when we add a product and assign it to a sub-page in the sitemap it actually creates a sub-sub-page - rather than simply creating the product page. Does this make sense? Does anyone else have the same/similar issue with an explanation?
