AJAX call keeps giving internal server errors

Hi all,
I'm trying to get data from /packages/example/elements/forms/fileManager.php with an ajax call, but even if the file is empty, it returns a 500 error. But when I include the file with View::element('url-to-file'); it works... any rules for this one?
