"replace_link_with_first_in_nav" loses drop down menus in auto_nav

We are testing the replace_link_with_first_in_nav function, however when enabled, the auto_nav loses the sub menus. Is there anyway to force the auto_nav to always show the sub-menus despite the parent page now being forced to first child?
