Article Publish Date In Canonical URL

I am trying to figure out how to get the publish date as a component of the canonical url. E.g. website.com/articles/2013/06/02/slug.

If I attempt to manually change the CU, it strips the slashes. I googled quite a bit and could not find any information on this. Do I have to create custom add on?
