Best way to have groups private areas?

Hi all! :-)
I have to create an intranet site where pending on the department of the company, the info on the page changes.
I've been looking at the forum, some tutorials and mainly to the advanced permissions model, but I'm unsure if this is the best way to go.
I'm thinking of mapping each department to a different group and the workers from a department to users inside the respective group.
It seems that with this advanced permissions model, I can set what each group will be able to see and edit, but I also need kind of a profile page for each group and profiles don't seem to work based on groups but users... Should I create profile pages manually?
Ohh!! And profiles must be *private*!
