Bootstrap3 mobile navbar not displaying correctly with "elemental theme"

Well actually the clonemental theme which is a copy of elemental.... The unthemed menu looks ok..

On a small screen the menu is replaced by a mobile nav button, but clicking on it shows horizontal nav items (like on a desk top), not vertical ones as per normal for a mobile device.
I'm really not sure how to go about fixing this. Can anyone suggest something?

Sounds to me like a CSS conflict, or CSS not being loaded correctly. I suggest progressively commenting out things you've added that might introduce/affect CSS until the menu behaves.
