Cannot see editable areas in page type edit mode but can see after adding a page to sitemap and then editing the page

My problem is the following. I have made a template and when i try to edit the page defaults i cannot see any areas to edit. However if i add the page in question to a sitemap and then click visit and start editing i can see all the editable regions just fine. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
