Can't add an Express List block - weird raw JSON error.

I'm in the early stages of a new Express based site. I've set up one very simple Express object so far and am trying to pull it into the page template using the Express List block. But when I click add I just get a white page with a raw JSON data dump on it. (See screengrab)

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Have tried a completely fresh install already in case I had mucked up the database but does the same thing.

On further inspection this was a theme conflict with C5 rather than an Express problem, but weirdly it was only manifesting itself with the Express blocks.
