Checking for updates won't go away

Just upgraded a site from 5.4 to 5.5.2.1 sad to say the "Checking for updates" spinner will not go away despite other posts on the forums to define('ENABLE_APP_NEWS',false) ... this window will not go away and presents errors in the javascript console..
