Clearing the Cache Question

When I clear the cache on our site, there are still hundreds of files left in the Files > Cache folder on the server. Is this normal?

We are going to try and move our site to a new host. Do I need to be concerned about the files in the cache before we back it up?

Thanks in advance..

Tim

You can delete all the files in the cache directory. Also, you can empty the "files/tmp" and "files/trash" folders as well.

Make sure you keep everything else in the files directory, though!

Great. Thanks! Should I do this before we backup our files before copying to our new hosting company? Or, can I do it after we copy them to the new site? I supposed either will yield the same results.

Thanks - Tim

I always remove these types of files before transferring. The idea is to make it so you don't have to copy so many.

Also, it's good to check these folders and clear them out every once in a while, as some web hosts have limitations on the number of files and folders on a given account.

I also recommend JohntheFish's addon - it is quite handy.

I had NO IDEA that so many files were being held in there. Took me 15 minutes to delete them. Once we get our site moved, I will keep an eye on those folder and use the Cache Vac.

If you use Backup Voodoo to make the copy, it will leave out the cache and other junk (as well as doing a bunch of other things in the backup that make creating the new instance easier).

Have a look at my Cache Vac job (free). It can be configured for a range of ways to clean the files cache out.
