Common Area Module

Hi All,
I have an idea to make a module which is only accessable from the dashboard which allows the editting of a new type of "area" called a "common area" which can be called from the template in much the same way as areas, but it not page dependant.

This is my attempt to make some global blocks which when editted will be changed on ALL pages. I have used the defaults for areas on page types, but when one is editted they are not all changed, as it simply creates a new block.

My question is: Can I make an installable module which is available in the Dashboard? Is there an example?

I can't simple make a block, as effectively it will need to have the capacity to have blocks put within it, and it will only be edittable from teh Dashboard, and only added through template code.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Have you investigated concrete5's 'scrapbook' function?
This should achieve exactly what you have detailed above.

Thanks for your reply fullflavour. I might not be using it correctly, but I don't think you edit the blocks in the scrapbook from the dashboard, and you need to add it individually to pages you want (although I have never tried adding it to the default page-type).

I am pretty sure that when I add a scrapbook block to all pages, if I edit one page, it will not change all of them? Can you confirm this is the case or am I wrong?

How do you make a global scrapbook?

What I have done is made a block on a page, click copy to scrapbook, choose the scrapbook (eg. Admin's) the I goto another page and add from scrapbook the block I just copied.

Problem is, if I edit it on the second page, it only changes the second page, not the first, or the one stored in the scrapbook to post on other pages.

What am I doing wrong?

Ahh... I just figured it out. That is great. I have run into a glitch, and I am not sure what set's it off, but occasionally when I try edit a global block from a page (not dashboard) it comes up with the window and simply says "access denied". I can't escape out of that and have to refresh??
