Custom Auto nav image

Hi, I've been trying to replace the next / previous text for images but I just can't seem to manage . I followed the only tutorial I could find on the forum but it does not work for me. Has the procedure changed, anyone would have a clear explanation maybe with example as it is not always easy to work with custom template whithout solid php knowledge.
