Custom routing with single pages (concrete5.6)

Hi Everyone,
I'm working on a c5.6 site where my client is calling in product data from an external database for a product detail page. The problem I'm trying to work out is that the client wants the individual product detail page URL to be immediately after the root (e.g.http://www.example.com/name-of-the-product)....
My first instinct was to create a single page, but now that I have, I'm not sure if and how I can remove the page handle from the URL to get the desired result.
If anybody has any ideas I'd be super grateful.
