Custom queries

Can I use a custom query to display data in my block? For example: I am making a "news" block and would like to only show the last 2 news items on the frontend. Actually, shouldn't this be part of the "add" / "edit" form?: "How many news items would you like to show?".

Any input is appreciated!

and in fact, this is exactly with the page list block lets you do.

either point it to the parent page in your news section and accept all types of pages.. or
tell it to look everywhere on your site but only for page types of news (if you've setup news page types).

at the top there should be an option for number of summaries to show.. change that to two.

you can make a custom template for that block to change formatting. Once you've made the summary block pointing to the data you like, click the block again but instead of hitting edit pick custom template to choose from a list of templates available for that block.
