Customising the autonav with images

I want to use images for the autonav buttons. How can I achieve this? Where does each element (html, css and images) go in the server?

I have read the customising pages but can't get my head around the procedure.

Please explain this simply as I am not a programmer but a UI designer.

Do you want to add unique images for each page or is it just a "style" thing, with the same image or icon for each page?
