Default Mail Settings & Custom Mail Servers

Hi all

I am using Google Apps for my mail exchanger on one of my sites. Fine and dandy - no problems here.

I set up the "Send Mail Method" as an external SMTP server (an address I set up in Google Apps) and this works fine also.

I noticed that the system cannot run the "Process Email Posts" job under System & Maintenance.

I'm trying to figure out (and maybe I'm going about this the wrong way) how I get the ability to reply to PM & Discussion posts through email.

Do I need to set up two separate email accounts - one for Private Messages and one for Discussion posts?

If the "Process Email Posts" job doesn't function - will this even work?

Should I have setup the external SMTP servers at all?

Sorry if this seems to be a lot, but I'm trying to get this right. I've read this post -->

but still haven't figured it out.

Thanks in advance!!

The SMTP settings/etc... only affect outbound mail coming from your website/application and going to your users.

The importers are different. You need to enable each and every importer for the ones you use (private messages, discussion post reply, etc...). Each one needs it own mail account, and it needs all its accurate information for _checking_ that mail account to be entered into the mail importer settings screen, which is unique for importer and separate from the main site's SMTP settings.

And yes, this requires the process email posts job to run, the more frequently the better.

Thank you for the quick answer - it makes a lot more sense to me now.

Question though - How come the job just keeps running? It doesn't seem to stop...

Disregard the last question - I've gotten it to stop running and have been able to set up the cron job to run.

When I tested it, the email address that the message came from (and therefore the reply to address) was the general external SMTP send mail method, not the separate mail importers that I set up.

Also - they should be set up as POP right? not SMTP....

Thanks again.

They must be POP accounts. SMTP is only used for the outgoing mail server that will send mail to your site visitors/admins.

Please forgive me but for some reason when I enable this for both PM & Discussions it just continually runs...

Is there a known issue using this with Google Apps accounts?
