Deleting a content block after adding content to the page doesnt delete the content already existing

Hi,
I had a content block say footer in all my templates initally and i built my site.
Added content to footer block in all the pages.
No i decided to not have the footer block any more and i deleted the footer content block from my template. By doing thids iam not able to see any editable content block called footer but the text that was there in footer block for the pages is still there. It doest get deleted, how do i do this.
