Digital Video Rental - How To?
I would like to offer digital tutorial videos on my website for rental. I haven't figured out the exact method I want to provide.
I'm thinking that once the user rents the video, they'll have 24 hours to view it, and I might put a 5-view limit on each purchase if this is an option with the add-on. This method would allow me to keep the costs low (like $1.00 per rental).
Alternatively, I might create a secure login area where all videos are available once the user is logged in. The user would purchase a subscription, and would gain access for his/her selected time frame, such as 24hrs, 7 days, 1 month or 1 year.
I'm not exactly sure which add-ons I'd need to purchase to make either of these options a possibility. Can someone please help guide me in the right direction? I don't have the funds to start buying add-ons to see what works and what doesn't...
Thanks!
Eric

Hi Josh - one of the developers contacted me via PM and suggested I try the eCommerce add-on, and have the users purchase place them into a group. The group would have a setting to remove the user after a pre-determined amount of time. This sounds like it would work perfectly for my subscription option.
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to offer the pay-per-video option. Since I haven't bought the eCommerce add-on yet, I can't test this... I'm curious if when the user purchases "Video 1" and they are added to a "Video 1" group for X hours, If the user could then decide to buy "Video 2" and simultaneously become a member of both groups, and if each group would remember its expiration date/time based on their respective purchase date/time stamp.
Does anyone know if this could work for my per-video option?

That could work. Have you tried out the eCommerce demo? It's here:http://ecommerce.concrete5.org/...

Ahh!! I had not seen that - thanks for the link! I logged in and looked at the items, and it looks like each item can place the user in a different group, so that might work perfectly! I suppose I just need to buy the add-on and start testing it a little more heavily. Thanks again Josh!

A lot of different approaches you can take here. How comfortable are you with PHP and HTML/CSS? That would be the ideal way to go (custom/roll-your-own). But you could possibly do it with a mix of add-ons and page/user attributes. I'll have to noodle it a bit and see what you can get without having to purchase add-ons that don't work out.
