Display page list that shows images from that page

Hi there,
I have a load of pages that display images, one page per project and I would like a project index to list out my sub pages using a page list but I want to show the images that are on the sub-page's content as thumbnails.
Does that make sense?
Is it easily doable, or will I have to create custom thumbnails and add them as a custom attribute?
