display certain item pairs in autonav?

this may seem like a strange request but i need to have the autonav spit out specific pairs of nav items from within a specific folder... ie:

nav-item-1
nav-item-5

nav-item-2
nav-item-6

nav-item-3
nav-item-7

nav-item-4
nav-item-8

is this possible? i'd be willing to embed 4 different autonav blocks each with their own template to make this happen.

is there any way? to clarify further, its showing sets of news items on the homepage in 4 columns. currently being pulled from the "2009" folder. they are rotated using jquery.

so, initially you see:
news1 | news2 | news3 | news4

then it rotates and you see:
news5 | news6 | news7 | news8
