Duplicate menus when updating default page menus

Recently, when I went to the default pages to make a change on the menu, and applied it to the child pages, when I returned to the site all my pages had two menus stacked on top of each other, even though the default page showed only one menu.

How can I prevent getting duplicate menus when I need to make changes to all the pages at once using the default page.

It happend to me also, it's very annoying and it's a pain to change all those pages back to the previous version :(
In my case it only happend for some of the child pages.

if you change the block that was already on the page defaults this should behave better. as soon as you start applying those changes to all pages of the type, you're basically copying it out so that's to be expected
