Easy question....

.. but I'm a novice so I must ask anyway. On the original theme I have a menu. I wanted to add a new menu option 'Contact' that opens a new page to that menu bar. How do I do that?

You just want to add a Contact page with a link on the menu right? Well, just sign in to your dashboard as admin, go to your home page and nthen click "Add page". Call it Contact - and add your content. Exit edit mode and publish your changes. Done!

I'm sure you're right but how do I create the menu item 'contact'. I create the page but I don't know how to create the button to activate it.

Do you have a menu on your page already? If you have the autonav block already installed, the page will just magically appear on the menu. Make sure you have added the page in the correct place though. If you want the page to be on the top level of your menu, You need to be on the Home page when you click the "Add page" button.
