Editing page type defaults not possible

Hi,
when I try to edit a page type's defaults (because I want to assign a specific theme to pages created using the composer) by clicking on "defaults" in dashboard/pages/types, I am redirected to the home page of my site, although the address bar shows (probably) the correct URL (of the form /index.php?cID=1187&mode=edit, where cID is different for the different page types).
I am logged in as admin, I use pretty URLs and the domain mapper. What could I be doing wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we would like to relaunch the site very soon.
