Email Verification query

I intend to install the Discussion Groups addon and wanted to find out how signup to my site via Concrete5 works. I believe that there is email verification via Concrete5 for users wishing to join my site - can anyone point me to documentation on this?
there is a pretty minimal outline of registration options in the documentation:

The best thing to do is to test it out and from that you'll see how it works.
