exclude from nav- automatically apply to children/external links?

I have a sitemap structure somewhat like this
[]-Page 1
--[]- Subpage1.1
--[]- Subpage1.2
[]-Page 2
--[]- Subpage2.1
--[]- Subpage2.2
[]-Page 3
--[]- Subpage3.1
--[]- External Link
I have Page 3 set up as "exclude from nav", as I don't want page 3 or its subpages to show up in the main nav, but the problem is I cannot do anything to prevent the external link from showing up in the nav. And it shows up as a child of Page 2.
Any clues as to how I can solve this?
