Has anyone in a dedicated or virtual hosting environment (not a shared hosting one) utilized an external database that was separate from where the concrete core was installed?

I'm trying to determine if there will be a negative performance impact in terms of having a virtual instance dedicated to just the database. I've done this in the past with other platforms and it usually yield good dividends in terms of overall server performance, but was wondering if anyone is actually doing this with concrete5.
