extra pages

I am having some problems getting my theme to work, so i went back to basics and made a copy of the default theme.

what i want is a is a dual language site es and en,

(i've read the posts on having site1 site 2 but from what i understand i then have 2 sites to maintain, which since i want to add content on a regular basis inc galleries with lots of pics i dont want to have to recreate everything twice. translating txt is one thing but to have 2sets of galleries is too much. (correct me if i've got that wrong))

anyway i figured i'll have a landing page with 2 cols of equal size, say 45% one side en the other es this would be the start point to lead into the two areas of the site, that way i could make do with one gallery and likewise with forms.

also im using a kwicks menu with image sprite so i can take care of the two languages easily that way.

prob is my added pages just dont work, hence starting again with plain yog.

here is the odd thing i dont understand if i can clear this up i may be able to figure the rest out.

if i make a new page using the plain yog template and the standard left, right or full pages the page appears as it should complete with header and nav. but if i make a copy of default.php and call it default1.php and add that to my site by going to themes/inspect and adding the page type. when i use this new page i get no header or nav why? it is exactly the same except in name.

i have my template working-ish but i cant get my pages to work, the footer is stuck, i added a min-height of 500px but the page stays at 500px and of course while thew site looks ok-ish in firefox it's broken in ie7, i just dont get the margin diffences.
however if i delete the min-height from the css the whole site falls to pieces.

this is why i went back to the begining, ps i'm no pro this is a site im puting together for my wife you can see it here talulamerula.com/c5
talulamerula.com has the working static html that i chopped up for the template.

any ideas/suggestions on gettiing this working would be very welcome.

TIA
