Failure updating

For a while now I have been trying to update C5 with no success, the message on the dashboard is, as ever...
clicking the link and downloading states:
I have attempted loading a zip into packages, and even re-replacing the /concrete directory, all with it failing to update or auto-install packages.
As a result of not updating it has had my development of the site and the change in features in concrete, so I've been lagging behind, I have been dealing with bad errors and slow performance.
This has happened on 2 sites I manage, the other states but i'm not so bothered updating it
All I want to do is update to the next highest version possible so I can update from there. Any help would be amazing.
