File Block link not linking to actual file in 5.7
Permalink
Hi,
I'm having an issue with linking a PDF file from a page via the File Block. I've uploaded the file to the File Manager, and selected it in the dialog when adding the File Block to the page. When I click on the link it generates, the link is to a what I think is an alias, but it's not making the connection to the actual PDF file.
For example, according to the File Manager, the actual URL of the uploaded file is:
http://subdomain.domain.com/application/files/5014/3943/2665/datash...
When I click on the link, I'm sent to:
http://subdomain.domain.com/index.php/download_file/39/185...
(Sorry for not using actual URLs, I'd like to keep it private for now. Can PM actual URL to someone if the answer isn't obvious by my description.)
I'm working with v5.7.4.2, and building the new site in a subdomain until it's ready to launch. I have not yet turned on 'Pretty URLs', and was thinking it may have something to do with this? I've cleared the cache, tried multiple browsers and platforms, all with the same result. Hoping this is just something simple I've overlooked. Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks for your helpful response. I manually added 'force' to the URL as you suggested and it did indeed download the file. So, now my question becomes two...
1) I do not have that check box in my File Block dialog box. I only have "File" and "Text for Linked File". Seems like something went awry in my install? What's the best way to replace the files for just one block?
2) Is the intent of the 'Force' option a way to keep the file from opening in the browser window? In this case, being a PDF, I think I'd like to open the file in the browser (preferably a separate window, though)
Thanks again for putting me on the right path!
**Update**
I have another install of 5.7 on a different host. I checked the File Block and it, too, only asks for the file and the text to display in the link. There's no option for 'Force'. I added a PDF, and this one does open in the browser window as expected. (Unfortunately, I don't see an option to open in a new window/tab.)

It turns out that the 'force download' checkbox wasn't added back in until version 5.7.5 so you'll have to upgrade to get that functionality

Trying to get PDF's to open exactly the way you want in other people's browsers is impossible because there are many, many ways that your users can have their browsers setup up to deal with PDF's . Personally, I use Foxit Reader which opens all my PDF links in an outside program.

The link for a download should have 'force' in it like this:
