File Permissions error on localhost

I'm scratching my head about this one. I've been using USBWebserver as a local web server, and developing my concrete5 site on that - then copying the whole thing onto a USB stick and taking it to work, copying to the local drive there and doing more work on it.

This has all been working fine, but now on my home machine, when I try to upload files using the file manager, I get the all too common error it seems, "Unable to copy file to storage directory. Please check permissions on your upload directory and ensure they can be written to by your web server."

A few days ago, I could upload fine on my home machine, but now I can't, so something has changed, and I don't know what. I figure it's something to do with USBWebserver as it doesn't matter whether I use Firefox, Chrome or IE9, I still get the same problem. Thing is, I am using exactly the same files at home, as at work, and there it works fine. Nothing about USBWebserver at home is different to how it is at work, as I today I made sure to copy every single file from work's computer onto the USB stick, delete the home copy, and copy off the USB stick again, but no change. The only difference is that work is Windows XP, home is Win 7.

Any ideas?

does changing the file permissions on the /files directory work? it should be set to at least 755

It's on windows, all users have full access, including system. I don't see why permissions would be any different to on my work machine, seeing it's a straight copy of all the folders ....

I'm not 100% so just trying to give you some ideas on what to look at. I haven't used Windows in forever but recall some friends having similar issues and their problem was related to the folder permissions and user.

Do both machines have different user names for the accounts you are login into and using windows as?
