Finnish characters messing up the search

Hi,
I have a following exotic problem with the search.
If I search for 'Kaurismäki', the search finds nothing.
If I search for 'Kaurismä' or 'äki', so that the Finnish character is first or last in the string, the search finds all the relevant results.
I've attached a screenshot of the situation.
Since the search partly works, I odn't think it's a problem with my settings. Everything is in utf-8, and the characters are as they should in the database.
I could poke around and try to fix this myself, if someone could point out the relevant files.
