Folders and File Sets in c5 :: V8
Permalink
Say I have just imported 1,000 images via the file manager. Luckily I was smart enough to make a new folder for them and enter that folder before uploading, so they are all contained within a folder by default... but now that I need them in specific file sets, how can I add all the files within this folder to a file set in one sweep? Or is there a way I can target the folder directly as if it was a fileset?
I am also curious as to how we use folders in 5.8?
I can't see a use case for them, so I am obviously missing some info..

I agree.
At first, I thought it was going to create "physical" folders on the server and put the files inside which would be awesome to know what's what on the server.
But it doesn't do that and so far it mostly looks like a less advanced version of file sets.

Yes, I thought the same and yes that would be excellent. to be able to isolate a bunch of images into a particular folder and access them as if they were in a fileset.
Having folders is truly awesome! Joomla is the only other CMS I personally know of that use folders. Client's actually requested this in the past and I'm glad to see it's apart of c5 :: V8.
But when there is over 1,000 files you cannot select all of them at the same time; as they all do not fit on one page.
So how do we make use of them?
Hi,
this is one use I can see for folders.
I am going to make a folder for individual members and set permissions so that only the member and admin can see the files in their folder. I can add the various files to the required sets as per V7 and use List Files From Set ad on to display files for download on a page.
This will mean that once the member is logged in they will see their available downloads grouped by set. A single page will show the correct list of files based on user permissions.
The big advantage with this is that as long as the files are uploaded into the members folder then the correct permissions are in place regardless of wether or not they are added to a set.
Prior to having folders the permissions would have to be added to the file at upload or sets created for each member with required permissions and the files added to them at upload. Uploading straight into their folder reduces the risk of incorrect permissions or no permission being applied.
I have always wanted to be able to upload files to a set rather than selecting sets after upload and this is a good alternative to that option.
I see folders as having many uses.

@cmerritt
What you describe sounds very cool.
When you complete it, are you open to writing a case study about it?

Ok.
But what the differences between folder and sets ?
Why don't use only "Folders" ?
moosh

I dont think they are accessed the same programatically at this point.
A block can import all files within a fileset and act on them, but I don't know if you can select a folder as a fileset in the same way.

Yes I think there are some technical choices but don't understand why 2 types of file classification... only one please ! How do you explain the difference to the client ??
Well folders didn't exist previously. File sets did. And they have a different purpose. It would just be nice add an entire folder to a fileset instead of manually adding each file.
Permissions for File Sets has been removed in V8 whilst Folders have permissions instead?
As I understand it, the core team decided that File Set permissions where too complicated when a file could be in more than one File Set.
Would it not have been better to restrict files to one set only rather than removing permissions altogether?
I think this is going to be a game changer for a lot of sites that are using permissions on File Sets in V7 and do the upgrade to V8.

I don't see a way to set folder permissions, the only options are to change the folder name.
And if file set permissions are gone what actually replaces them? It's not like files in a set are always all in the same folder.

Restricting files to one set only could cause more problems than it solved.
A number of blocks use file sets to select files. I use a gallery block that displays images from selected set. The galley block is used in a number of pages and only displays images relevant to that particular page but on one page we want to show all gallery images so unless we upload images twice they need to belong to more than one set. This is just one example of the many uses single files in multiple sets have.
I have only just started to explore the changes in C5.8 and I see some good things and some not so good things.
I am not sure why the check box to select files has gone?
I can see removing permissions from sets could be a big issue for some people that have used this feature.
Also why have they gone to right click for some things such as folder permissions when previously everything was left click.
Colin
Edit
I have had a look at file manager again and found that selecting multiple files is now done with the shift key and this is why the check box has gone.

Did you say you are able to set FOLDER permissions by right clicking on them? I only see the option to change the title when I do that....
I have advanced permissions on, not sure if that changes things for the right click.
See attached image of what i see when right clicking on folder

Thanks I needed to enable it.
I am not sure you can use filter by folder. It might be worth finding out though. I'll have a look
