Formatting an inserted date

I have a need to automatically insert today's date into a page and found the appropriate button within the HTML Editor when editing a block.
However, I cannot see a way to change the format of the inserted date from the default of YYYY-MM-DD (eg., 2013-01-02). Is there an easy way to present an inserted date as "January 2"? Or like this: "1/2"?
