Getting embedded URLs to show the file and extension

This is a followup to another thread in which I was reporting problems integrating ISSUU Smartlook into a Concrete5 site.
The problem is that if I upload a file and refer to it in a page, the Concrete5 URL omits the file and its extension.
Can this behaviour be changed to make the URLs more conventional?
