Global Areas and layout tool

When I click on the menu to apply the layout option to a global area it is not there? How can I split the area into 2 columns like the regurler areas?

It's impossible to do that like with normal areas. Best way is to modify template - add two global areas, and set them properly in css.

Or if it's your own website and you're familiar with HTML you could just add an HTML block.
