Global Scrapbook and Page Defaults in 5.4.2
Permalink
I noticed in the latest release that blocks in my areas are now color coded when in Edit Mode.
I went through my typical site setup routine and created all of my page defaults (navigation, footer menu, a couple sidebar items) and then started adding pages.
I noticed that all of the blocks that were placed from a Page Default have an orange dotted line around them whereas blocks I place directly onto a page have the red dotted line around them.
Upon editing an Orange block, I saw the message at the top saying "This is a global block. Editing this block will change it on all pages of the site"
Pretty cool, I thought.
But here's what I found:
1.) It doesn't appear that editing an Orange block from a page actually edits the global block like it says. In fact, it turned that block to a Red dotted line and did not change globally.
2.) I had to go back to Page Defaults to actually change something on a global basis.
So...does this mean that my old Global Scrapbook way of doing things is no longer necessary?

Nevermind, you're correct. That message is a "disconnect" message. I must have just skimmed over it assuming it was something else.
I actually don't mind using the Page Defaults as a Global Content thing...however, I've never had a use for Global Content outside of a Page Default kind of thing.
I can see on larger sites especially how Page Defaults would just confuse things.

If instead it's saying that it's a global block and will apply across the entire site, perhaps it's because you have a global scrapbook block placed in the page defaults so the system is getting confused? (And if that's the case, then there's a bug and the message shouldn't say that it's global).
The whole page defaults thing is so confusing to me, I try really hard to avoid it for anything other than "default content that appears on new pages in the future" (as opposed to using it to manage global content that already exists). I prefer to use the free "Global Area" addon from the marketplace instead, and put the global area block in the page defaults, and point it to some page that's not in the page defaults that will server as the one place to go to edit that area.
