Grid Layout Container Adjustments

Hi when using a Grid Container Framework as laid out here:

I constantly come up against issues adjusting the layout. If I set as 'Freeform' it works fine as per image 1, however if I select the 'Framework' the adjusting sliders don't seem to work. They used to work in 5.6, but now in 5.8 I have always had issues.
Any ideas?
