Having an error with Gallery 1.8 and php 5.4

When I switched to php 5.4, I get this error:

Warning: Creating default object from empty value in /home2/greatfe1/public_html/packages/gallery/blocks/gallery/controller.php on line 51

Suggestions welcomed...
