Help! Site live and missing loads of images!

I really hope someone can help. I've just moved my site from a /newsite folder into the root directory. I changed the site.php file to remove the /newsite from define('DIR_REL', '');

I'm now getting lots of "image not found" messages. Even though a few of the images are showing, most, including some from the same folders, aren't. Most of the images from the main slider aren't showing either (but again a couple are). I've tried clearing the cache with no improvement.

Any help REALLY welcome as the site is now live and looks terrible.

Anyone? When I select a folder in the file manager and try to rescan them I get a "File 1.png could not be found" on over half of the images.

When I replace the files manually it works but there are literally hundreds of images on the site and I'm frightened that there is a more serious problem happening here. Is there a way to replace images in one go? I tried deleting and re-uploading whole sets of images in the past but that proved to be problematic. I've tried setting the /file directory to 777 and then back to 755 (recursively), clearing the cache etc... Nothing works.

Any help very welcome.
