How can I create badges like Concrete5?

The badges I'm talking about are the more integrated ones like 'Made 100 posts' and 'Been with us for 1 year'.

Also I'd like to know how I can promote users to another user group after a certain number of posts in the forum.

The automatic badges are either triggered by an action (posting) or by a job (the yearly badges).

So for the posts one, what it does is hook into the pagetype add event and check how many posts the user has, if its >= to the number of posts needed it gives them the badge, you can also do other things like adding a user to a group, sending an email, etc.
