Hi There,
Whenever I try to change the name of the template file "blog_entry.php" and update the page type in c5, none of the sections that use the template (news, recipes & products) work.
Is there a way to change the name from blog to something more generic so clients can better understand that this page type is used for more than just blogs?

You can easily change the name that a client sees for any page type by going to Dashboard -> Pages and Themes -> Page Types, then click the "Edit" button next to the page type in question, and edit its name there. Do *not* change the handle, and do *not* change the actual file name on your server.
To answer your other question -- what you're doing isn't wrong per se, but I generally like to have a different page type for each type of content (so one for blog, one for news, one for recipe, etc.). The thing that makes the blog work for you isn't the page type but rather the blocks that are on it (a page_list block at the top-level showing the index, tags block in sidebar with tag attribute showing by default on those page types, etc.). But if they are all functioning and looking exactly the same I guess there's not much reason to go through the trouble of duplicating that all over the place (as long as you can come up with a generic name for the page type that makes sense to the client).
And a more general note (since you're new to C5): the Page List block is the key to the whole castle. Definitely make lots of custom templates for it (or if you're a programmer at all, look into how to actually use the page_list class in code), and also check out the free Page List Teasers addon (http://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/page-list-teasers... ) which makes the page list show actual content excerpts from the pages instead of just the description field (this addon and the blog functionality are both derived from the same original code, but using Page List Teasers lets you use that outside the context of blog_entry pages).

I now fully appreciate that pageList templates are the keys to the castle, the thing I've struggled with (for the past 2 days) is that each time I try to create a custom pageList template, I get php errors.
The ONLY way i've been able to make it work, is if I use the blog_entry.php page type on the entries I'm trying to list - but then I have to make one template work across all those sections (as you guys have pointed out).
What am I missing? Even when I copy and paste the blog_entry.php template and ONLY modify the markup I still get errors when I try to list the entries.
