How is ccm_highlighter calculated

My ccm_highlighter element is very small on all Areas, perhaps 2px x 6px. Its unusable.
I have been through my styles and there is nothing that effecting it directly.
Which suggests that the areas are the problem and that when the dimensions of ccm_highlighter are calculated that its getting it wrong because of the area. Rather than any CSS clash with ccm_highlighter.
Even removing my own stylesheet hasn't helped. In fact the width and height values are completely missing from ccm_highlighter, I can see my from other installs that they should in fact me inline styles.
Any ideas?
