How to make styles customizeable from the dashboard? V 5.6

Hi,
can any one help me how to make styles customizeable in dashboard? I know it takes this code in typography.css: /* customize_link */color: #dd176a;/* customize_link */
but somehow this doesn't always work. So what else do I have to take into account?
Do I have to look for link styles in main.css (or equivalent) and delete them in there?
Any other places I should look?
What styles can I make customizeable at all? Colors and fonts I know, anything else?
