but I can't seem to find documentation on how to create a page type

what I need is a page type with 3 equal colums for part of the page

can someone point me to the right documentation

you would need to make a custom page type.
For you it would be basically copying and pasting from the left and right sidebar page types its not to hard just make sure they have the right names
