Identify Files used / not used within site?

Is it possible (built-in or coding) to determine which files (for example images) are in use on the various pages of a site?

Particularly useful not only for having lots of images but over time editors will add/edit/remove images and they just accumulate in the /files/ directory.

Ideally I'd like to add a flag to Filemanager like "In Use = Y" with a link/list of pages where it is used.

its really hard to tell if a file is linked too, you could possibly find if its being used in a block that uses the file manager, but if they for example stuck it in the content block then you wouldn't know,
