Identify returning visitors

Hi There

I am working on a project. Is there an other way then using cookies to identify returning visitors? I mean, analytics tools can this too.
Is C5.7 able to do this?

It's a good idea... but personallly, I've only used javascript for this kind of thing.

I'm using Javascript to create a cookie.
