'index' in url

Hi All, something weird going on with a new install, I have cleared the cache, pretty urls are on.
In page properties, the canonical url is "http://dev.url.co.uk/company/"
If I try this url I get redirected to the homepage.
I can get to the correct page by putting "index" into the url like this "http://dev.url.co.uk/index/company/"
This is happening on all my pages and driving me mad!

It seems there was a blank line added to the top of my .htaccess file, which once removed, sorted out the problem.
